I believe this is based on the idiom, "riding your own rope". With the addition of the Back to the Future II skateboard symbolizing our post-modern addiction to consumerism. And his elf ears are there to show that his own perspective of himself is in fact a fantasy. IF we were to see him as he really is, he would have a small upper body and big lower body, is my guess.
