Iterations on a boring design

After my previous post I couldn't rest until I improved my design. I know it was just supposed to be a doodle but I'm just so tired of drawing boring. I think he's getting closer to something engaging. Thoughts?

It's already looking better. Love that mouth.

Pose-wise you might try offsetting the tilt in the shoulders vs the hips a little more. Might help him feel more wild/cutthroat/actiony.

Just a thought.

This is something I've been thinking about for my own work... I admit that these pirates need something. I think part of it may be that he fits into the pirate mold too well. You've done it in the Scott style but that seems to be about as much as you brought to the table. I will say that I love what's going on with the later beards. But those are such a small element. What else can you do to not just flush out the design but also the character? Why is he angry and how does that inform his design? I'm probably just preaching to the choir but these were my thoughts as I looked at 'em.

my thoughts = i see 2.. maybe 3 different pirates.

meaning = first dude looks kinda clueless.. and i'm thinking how could you push THAT character? is THAT the character you want to push? you make an angry pirate, you have a different character. is he an angry.. smelly pirate? dirty pirate? ....slow pirate?

when you go throwing around the "d" word (*cough*design*cough*) i think "one thing, that is designed for 'x' purpose" and maybe "steps leading up to that one thing and/or purpose."
so basically... what Jeff said. heh.

also, you guys have been posting QUITE consistently as of late.... my reader thing thanks you for that.
