Hey, Old Man!

Again, refining my sense of color and digital painting, with a bit of relaxing thrown in after trying to pump out a portfolio to send to Pixar. I was trying to imply a little bit of form but mostly leave the old man feeling fairly flat. Are we feeling that effect? Is it appealing? If it weren't time for bed he would have been walking a dog.

The hint at form is a little too subtle because the value contrast between light and shadow are very similar. Even when painting flat it helps to pick about 5 values that are obviously different from each other and assign them to specific areas of the painting: Value 1= shoes, value 2=jacket, etc... These become your local values and the highlights and shadows will become specific to each area. This keeps things clear and prevents the piece from getting too muddy. We should talk more about painting sometime... if you want.

He is a really fun character though. You're really into drawing intellectuals.

Yeah, when I woke up this morning I thought, "wow this doesn't look the way it did last night!" I think that while I'm working on something I become hyper aware of contrast, and then worry that I'm putting it on too heavily. But then I just end up with a muddy picture...

I certainly wouldn't mind some Scott Gwynn painting lectures... when you have time...
